TAIHAPE

MILK IN SCHOOLS The Government is not prepared to grant financial assistance to prospective suppliers under the scheme whereby it is proposed to provide free milk to school children, and it seems that the ritatter cannot be further pursued in the Taihape district at the moment. Local school children will have to wait for their free supply of milk until a satisfactory scheme has been evolved. The secretary of the school committee (Mr A. Fuller) has received tne following letter from the DirectorGeneral of Health: “I have to thank you for your letter of March 16, and for the very full information supplied and enquiries made by your committee. So far as the financing of the scheme is concerned, the Government is not prepared to grant financial assistance to prospective suppliers, and it seems that the matter cannot be further pursued in the Taihape district at the moment. It may be possible when the scheme is instituted in Palmerston North to supply Taihape by rail, or alternatively another scheme is. being investigated which may overcome the difiiculiies which have been met in endeavouring to introduce the scheme into the more remote communities.” The Health Inspector (Mr W. H. Roy) stated that the Director-General had informed him that in view of the fact that at present, he was not prepared to depart from the condition requiring pasteurisation, it. was not possible to proceed further at present. The system that will probably be inaugurated in Palmerston North has been discussed, and the advantages have been realised. The possibility of being able to receive the night’s milk pasteurised, bottled and railed from Palmerston North, to reach Taihape on the following morning is considered satisfactory by the Taihape School Committee. GENERAL NEWS The improved facilities that are to be provided at the Taihape Post Office include additional counter and mailroom accommodation. As soon as the final working plans have been completed. the Public Works Department will call for tenders, and no available delay will occur in proceeding with the work. REPRESENTATIVE FOOTBALL TAIHAPE v. WANGANUI Local Rugby fans are looking forward to the match between Taihape and Wanganui, to be played at Taihape to-morrow for the Pownall Trophy. The annual encounter between the maroons and the River City representatives, invariably draws a big crowd, and given line weather a record “gate” is expected. Taihape will be represented by a strong team which would be stronger still if D. Barrel), Utiku’s star back, were included, but there is a possibility that the visitors will have too much pace for the home team. To-morrow will have its own tale to tell and all Taihape is hoping to see a fast, open, and spectacular game. THE MAJESTIC “WHEN YOU’RE IN LOVE” Grace Moore’s newest picture, "When You're in Love,” produced by Columbia, opens a three-day season at (he Majestic Theatre to-morrow. Cary Grant joins the ranks of the opera star's leading men for the film. Tullio Carminati, Leo Carillo, Robert Allen, and Franchot Tone have preceded him as recipients of Miss Moore’s favour on the screen. This also marks the first occasion that Grant has appeared in a musical picture. He was recently seen in “Suzy.” Story values were stressed in the production of "When You’re in Love,” which was written by none other than Robert Riskin. noted writer of “It Happened One Night." and other hits. Among those featured in support of Miss Moore, besides Grant, are Aline McMahon. Henry Stephenson. Thomas Mitchell. Catharine Doucet, and Luis Alberni. PERSONAL Mr. F. C.
