NEW FLOATING DOCK

Durban is to’ have a new floating dock capable of lifting vessels displacing 4000 tons. It will be of the double-sided type known as the “box,” side walls built on to the pontoon, called the pontoon and two parallel side walls built on to the pontoon. It will be of such a size as to be capable of being dry-docked in the Durban graving dock. The following main dimensions are given: Overall length 350 ft.; overall width, 88ft.; overall depth of pontoon at centre, 9ft.; overall height of side wall above outer edge of pontoon, 27ft.; draught of water over keel blocks, 17ft. 6in.; depth of water at required site, 31ft. The accommodation will comprise three cabins and a small messrooni, and there will also be a galley. The machinery for operating the dock will consist of two separate installations, each comprising two electric motors driving a vertical spindle centrifugal pump.
