WANGANUI EXECUTIVE

MONTHLY MEETING HELD CONGRESS DELEGATES’ APPRECIATION The monthly meeting of the executive of the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce was held last evening. Mr E. M. Silk presided and those present were Messrs C. P. Brown. Smith, W. J. Gibson Hughes, D. G. O’Toole, W. J. Gilberd, F. H. Bethwaite, A. E. Rankin, J. Williams, L. Brinkman, and H. Bebarfeld. Mr W. J. Gibson Hughes reported that arrangements had been finalised for the holding of Coronation shopping week from May 10 to May lb. All the industrial exhibits space for the industrial exhibition in the Drill Hall had been disposed of.

“It was the unanimous wish of members of the executive committee that I should convey to you their sincere thanks for the generous hospitality extended by the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce to the members of the congress and to say that the committee is assured that the congress would always remain a memorable occasion to all who were privileged to take part,’’ stated a letter received from the secretary of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce of the British Empire in referring to the conference held in Wellington recently and the hospitality extended to members of the party which paid a brief visit to Wanganui. The chairman reported on the recent meeting held to discuss the question of rating. A sub-committee had been set up, he said, to consider some form of equitable rating for Wanganui for submission to the Government. It was the most sensible move he had heard of.

Mr Silk expressed his appreciation of the work carried out by the Wanganui Tourist and Development League. The league had undertaken the entertainment of members of the Christchurch Corsair Club during their recent brief visit to the city. This was only one of the good works that the league had undertaken. The league was carrying out a good work and was deserving of the appreciation and assistance of the Chamber of Commerce. On the motion of Mr Gibson Hughes it was decided to send a letter of appreciation to the Associated Chambers of Commerce for its reviews on cuirent legislation and its possible effects. Mr Gibson Hughes said that the reviews were invaluable to all businessmen. The chairman said he endorsed the remarks of Mr Gibson Hughes. Mr Gibson Hughes said that It seemed a pity to him that, the chamber had ceased paying visits to local industries. Mr D. G. O’Toole said that the chamber had endeavoured to make the visits too rushed in the past. He considered that the visits might be made each two or three months. The question of arranging further visits at intervals of two or three months with a possible visit toward the end of this month or early In June was referred to the publicity committee for consideration
