An interesting bulletin giving a brief biography of each of the Maoris whose portraits appear in the Alexander Museum has been prepared by Mr. Ernest Barns, a member of the Board of Trustees. The biographies are based on Mr. Barns’ personal contact with the Maoris and much of the information contained in them has hitherto not been published. The portraits were painted principally by Gotfried Lindauer to the order of the late Sir Walter Buller, 40 years ago.

Gannets Migrating Gannets at the Cape Kidnappers sanctuary have now commenced their annual migration, although a fair number of the birds still remain. It has been found from the observations of the rangers that the birds choose a period of full moon for their migration from the sanctuary for parts unknown, and also a period of full moon for their return, usually early in the month of August. Full moon occurred on Monday, and it is expected that by the end of the week the majority of the birds will have left. Mountain Weather. “The mountains of New Zealand would be a veritable paradise if it were not for the very bad weather, for which one who goes into them must always be prepared,” remarked Miss Kate Gardiner, the English climber, in a lecture at Christchurch, in which she described some cf her climbs in the Southern Alps this season. “However,” she added, “if it were not for the severity of the wealther I suppose this beautiful world of snow and ice would not exist. We cannot have everything.” Warrants of Fitness.

City Council traffic inspectors have been on the warpath during the past three days for motorists who have failed to obtain warrants of fitness for their motor vehicles. Under the regulations, all motor vehicles were required to be examined for warrants by March 31 but the traffic inspectors have given the motorists ample time to have their cars examined. The majority of motorists left the inspection of their vehicles until after the gazetted date with the result that garages were unable to keep up with the number of vehicles coming forward lor inspection. Many motorists have not even taken their cars into garages or to the City Council workshops for inspection and they probably will find the delay a costly matter. The City Council traffic officers are affixing small stickers to the windscreens of all vehicles which have been examined and passed as roadworthy.
