NORMANDIE CLAIMS BLUE RIBAND OF ATLANTIC
Received March 23, 11.5 p.m. PARIS, March 22. Commander Thoreaux, captain of the Normandie, finishing the first voyage from New York after the two months’ overhaul and fitting of four-bladed propellers, wirelessed that he had completed the pasage from Ambrose Light to Bishop Rock, Scilly Isles, the official course for the Atlantic Blue Riband (2978 miles) in 4 days 383 seconds, averaging 30.99 knots, which he claimed as a record, beating the Queen Mary’s voyage last year, when she covered the shorter course of 2708 miles in 3 days 23 hours 57 minutes, averaging 30.63 knots.
An official of the French line emphasises that the record has been made in mid-winter. The Normandie, during the last two days, has been driving against strong head winds. The new propellers are made of very light alloy, each weighing three tons less than the old.
