TAIHAPE

THE MAJESTIC “HIS BROTHER’S WIFE” “His Brother’s Wife,” the daring story of a young scientist who ventures in the jungle to find the cure for a dreaded malady and returns to the realisation that the woman he loves is his brother’s wife, provides a dramatic vehicle for Barbara Stanwyck and Robert Taylor. On his final fling in New York, the scientist encounters a red-headed girl and falls in love with her instantly. He considers quitting the proposed expedition. but his brother, played by John Eldridge, persuades him to carry on. In her bitter reaction of anger ana disappointment the girl marries the brother at home. This is the situation to which the young explorer returns. Her love for him is just as reckless, and they go back into the jungle together, renouncing the world. There, after her husband has divorced her. the young scientist turns on the girl and orders her to go back. He has failed in his battle to overcome a dreaded jungle disease by discovering an anti-toxin, and has determined to inject the germ into his own veins, in order to study its secrets. But the girl anticipates his plan. ST. PATRICK’S DAY SPORTS The Taihape St. Patrick’s Day Sports Club was favoured by fine weather for its annual gathering on the Oval Domain on Wednesday (St. Patrick’s Day). The programme included running, cycling, hose events, national dancing, children’s races and miscellaneous events. The star attraction was a special invitation scratch cycle race of two miles. This event was won by Jack Guilliard, the Taihape champion, by a narrow margin from M. Green (West Coast, N. 1., champion), with Manning (Hawke’s Bay champion), third, and Blackett, of Levin, fourth. The presence of these prominent cyclists stimulated interest in the cycling events, and thereby contributed to the success of the meeting. Green won the mile cycle from Guilliard, while Manning was first home in the two mile event. Manning also finished first in the three mile cycle, which was marred by an unfortunate accident on the bend leading into the home straight, where Guilliard and Green both fell, the Taihape boy receiving a painful, though not serious, injury. Green was badly shaken. The corner in question requires banking In order to lessen the risk of an accident. Green was leading with Guilliard and Manning close behind, when the mishap occurred. It looked as though Green, who is a fast finisher, would have won the race, if there had been no accident.

C. Doyle, the young Taihape runner, distinguished himself by winning noth the 75 and 100 yards handicap. K. G. Coles (Marton) also achieved distinction by securing first place in both the 220 and 440 yards handicap. P. Wallace won the mile run.

In the horse events the open pony jump was won by J. Wright’s King, while Mrs T. C. Lowry’s Bertie carried off the chief honours in the open hunters’ jump. The organisation of the meeting was all that could be desired, and reflected great credit on the officials concerned, especially the president (Rev. Father Doolaghty), the secretary (Mr B. Guthrie), and Mr J. Stead. More sideshows than usual were in attendance, and business was brisk. The chair-o’-plane was particularly well patronised by the younger generation. The attendance of the public was on a par with that of last year. Results are as follow: Running Events. 75 Yards Handicap.—First heat: C. B. Murphy (Byds.) 1, J. Johnson (61) 2. Time, 7 2-ssec.
