NORTH ISLAND LAMB
MEAT BOARD’S COMPETITION COMMENTS ON WANGANUI PLACINGS Judge’s comments on the Wanganui placings in the North Island District Lamb Competition, entries for which were exhibited at the 1935 Wanganui Show, held last November, and judged I finally in London, have been received by the Wanganui Agricultural and Pastoral Association from the secretary of the Nev/ Zealand Meat Producers’ Board. The comments are as follow: Pen No. 34, awarded first prize and placed first at the works (V. J. Bryant, Fordell): A beautiful pen of lambs of most desirable size, well covered and ideal from the London butchers’ point of view . Pen No. 22, awarded second prize (Mrs. E. J. Taylor): Three exceedingly good lambs, very fleshy with an absence of internal fat, but scarcely up to pen No. 34 in shape and make. Pen No. 70, awarded third prize (James Campion and Co.): Three exceedingly good lambs full of meat and altogether a most attractive pen. The judges could not place them higher for the reason that they were not quite so sharely, especially in the hindquarters. The London manager of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board has also been able to obtain from the judges their remarks on pens which were placed in New Zealand, but did not secure places in the London judging.
Pen No. 32, placed secqnd on hooks in New Zealand (Alfred Duncan): This pen contained two very choice lambs, but the third was slightly fiery in colour and dark in the flesh, and therefore could not meet with the approval of the judges. Pen No. 24, placed third on hooks in New Zealand (J. B. Davis): This pen contained two exceedingly good lambs, but the other—a weather--showed an emphatic tendency to fatness in loin.
The latter added that the London manager was not hopeful of being able to obtain special reports of this nature in the owing to the fact that the judges had more than they could undertake in the time available.
