ON TRENTHAM TRACKS

AUTUMN PREPARATIONS YESTERDAY’S OPERATIONS - With the close proximity of the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting, which opens on Thursday, it was anticipated that there would be some visitors on the tracks yesterday morning and some fast galloping, but there was neither. The only visitor on the scene was Silver Ring, and after the torrential rain in the early hours of the morning the trial grass was not opened, except for a single gallop, writes “Rangatira” in the Evening Post There was heavy xain throughout ihe night in the Valley, and though the weather had cleared again at daw n everything was very wet. There new seems no prospect of faster going for the meeting than at best an easy track, and more rain would make it soft. Yesterday was fine, but without a great deal of drying in the air. Permission was secured to sprint Deficit (R. Morris) half a mile, and he recaroed the good figures of 5± 2-ssec. on the sodden track. He knocked himself last Thursday and his gallop was in the nature of a test. He looks an improved horse after his recent trip north. His stablemate Debham is every bit as well as when he went away. The riding of H. Telford's horses on the first day (Debham, Deficit and Accomp.ice) will be done as usual by C. Goulsbro’, who was not injured in his fall at Napier Park last Thursday. Goulsbro’ will also be on Good Sun in the Trial Plate, but he will not be attending on the second day, as he has to return for Ohinemuri. Silver Ring is carrying a bright bloom, but he is in need of galloping. After recovering from his bruised foot, he suffered trouble in the shoulder, and, according to his trainer (J. Stewart), it is fifteen weeks since he had a fast trial. Whether he starts in the Thompson on Thursdav depends on the outcome of a gallop he is to he given this morning. He will probably also run in the Challenge Stakes on the second day, when he will have to carry the full 141 b penalty for his three wins in Sydney early in the season, making his weight 16.1, an Impost under which only Gloaming (three times), Achilles and Grana Knight have so far succeeded. His rider will be A. E. Ellis. Silver Ring, in common with most of the other horses, was given only pacing and exercise. Siegmund was sen/ out to the country at the week-end lor a three months’ spell, as it was realised that a nrm track such as he desires is now past possibility this week. His absence reduces the St. Leger held to tour a s Fi ying Chief ha£ a]readv been withdrawn. Maestro, whose only engagement at the meeting will be the Champion Hack Cup on the second day. and Peacock, from the south, were expected to arrive over the week-end, but they did not put in an appearance. Not many visitors are now likely to turn up till during to-day. addltional riding engagements for Thursday are: H. N. Wiggins, Darecourt; S. Wilson. Friesland, Acceptable, Only One, Sea Wrack, and Kine? a i> J ‘ Brou S htoß . Arctic King P. Atkins, Sunny Blonde and Mandamus; P. Burgess, Myriam, Lag-' 5, ard - S” d Gay Hunter; B. H.
