AUCKLAND GAS COMPANY
PROBLEM OF RISING COSTS. DIFFICULT YEAR JUST OVER. [ Per Press Association, ] AUCKLAND, Feb. 8. “From a managerial point of view last year was perhaps the most difficult the company ever experienced. General unrest and rising cost of materials added considerably to the burdens of management,” said • Sir George Elliott, at the annual meeting of the Auckland Gas Company. The outstanding feature in the statement of accounts is the great advance in expenditure in every department. This state of affairs has been brought about by the arbitrary increase in the weekly wages bill by shortening the weekly working hours and by a rise in the cost of coal freights and materials. To further aggrevate the position the income tax and land tax has also been raised. The amount of income tax payable this month will amount to £39,715 and will equal 64 per cent, of the total amount of dividend now being paid to shareholders, he added.
