HARVESTING BEGUN
MARKETS IN CANTERBURY WHEAT YIELD LIGHTER [ Per Press Association. ] CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 6. Fine hot weather has allowed harvesting to proceed at full speed and deliveries of wheat are being made in a steadily increasing stream. Generally the sample is excellent, but yields have turned out well below expectations. In some districts farmers report threshings ten bushels to the acre below those obtained last year. Fowl wheat is easier, the quotation now being 5s 3d f.0.b., with little business passing. The North Island demand is restricted, as buyers are waiting to see what the fixed price will be. Oats are coming in freely and the sample and yields are excellent. Duns are better than they have been for some seasons. Some potato crops are ready, though it is unusually early. In every district crops are looking very well and heavy yields are expected. Farmers are prepared to accept £3 10« to £3 15s for prompt delivery. A tannumber of lines of Plains cocksfoot have been received. In general the sample is lighter than usual. The few lines of Akaroa seed that have made their appearance also seem to be light. Prices for ryegrass appear to be too low to tempt farmers.
