Meteorological Office, Wellington, Wednesday, January 13, 4 p.m. General Situation.—An anti-cyclone covers the South Tasman Sea and extends on to the Dominion, but it is apparently losing intensity and an extensive cyclonic depression is now centred west of Norfolk Island and is moving south-eastwards. Forecast.—Winds: Light to moderate and variable winds at first, north-easterlies soon setting in, however, in the far north and becoming strong and of gale force in places, elsewhere winds between easterly and south-easterly prevailing and later freshening generally from Cook Strait northwards. Seas (New Zealand waters): Considerable sx.lll south of East Cape, elsewhere slight to moderate but rising north of East Cape. Eastern Tasman Sea; Increasing northeast to easterly winds in the northern portion with rising seas; moderate south-easterly to southerly winds in the southern portion with moderate seas. Weather.—Mainly fair to fine in western districts of the South Island, elsewhere cloudy to overcast with showers or misty rain at limes, especially in eastern areas. More general rain developing shortly in the northern portion of the North Island with some heavy falls in the Auckland province. Time of sunset to-day:—7.ss p.m. Time of sunrise to-morrow--5.4 a.m. Phases of the Moon for January.—Third quarter, January 5; new moon, January 13: first quarter, January 20; full moon, January 27.
