CHRISTMAS BOWLING

WANGANUI TOURNEY FIRST DAY’S RESULTS SOME CLOSE GAMES. The Wanganui Bowling Centre’s Christmas tournament started on Saturday. The weather was overcast with sultry temperatures. The contestants were all local players, no outside rinks having entered. Twentyfour rinks, divided into two sections, participated and the tournament will be continued to-day. The Wanganui and Wanganui East greens were used on Saturday. Today Wanganui East and Gonville will be the scene of play. Players were welcomed at the Wanganui green by Mr. A. Crawford, president of the centre, while at Wanganui East Mr. A. W. Jones acted in a like capacity. During the day’s play some very interesting bowling was witnessed. In some games an extra head was played to decide the winner. Owing to rain on the previous day the greens were on the heavy side at the start of play but improved considerably as the day advanced. In the first round, with one head to play, Holloway required two to win from Naumann. The former was three up on the head while Naumann, with his last, pushed one of his own in for shot. Kirk and Benefield had a great fight. With the last head to play Benefield was one up on the board. Kirk secured a brace, giving him victory. During this, and other games, Benefield had several drives, but they nearly all missed their objective. On the 13th head of the Benefield— Coombe game the score stood at 19—8 in favour of Coombe. During the remainder of the game Benefield pulled up considerably, but not sufficient to win, being defeated by one point. • The board read twenty all on the 19lh head between McKay and Healey. The former secured singles on the last two heads. On the 19th head the score was 23 all between Scrivener and Naumann. The last two heads brought singles to Scrivener. On the 18th. between Kirk and Moir the score was 14 all. On the 19th Moir secured four and singles on the remaining two heads. In Section A, Armstrong and Goldstone have won all three games played, while in the same section Moffatt. Gordon and Kirkwood have lost all three games, which is something of a surprise, for they are all noted players. In Section B all rinks have had a loss.
