SANDON

METHODIST SUNDAY SCHOOL I There were large congregations . present, at both services on Sunday last when the Sanson Methodist Suni day School celebrated its anniversary. I The Minister, Rev. R. E- Fordyce, Grained and conducted the choir, and I preached at both services. Miss Margaret Coulter, the infant teacher of I the Sunday School ably performed . all the duties of the organist, while Mrs. E. Bowater assisted with the singing. At the morning service Miss Marie Tostevin and Master George Fordyce read the scripture lessons, and Esme McKay and Gordon Currie received the free-will offerings for the school’s funds. The Rev. Fordyce's morning subject was “The roads of life,” in which he made a strong appeal to the young hearers as well as to the older ones, to walk along the road of the Christian life. At the evening service Miss Shirley Bond and Leslie Fordyce read the scriptures and Miss Dora Bishop and Master Bruce Young received the offerings. A special feature of the musical portion of the evening service was the solo by Miss Nellie Masters and the trio by Masters Gordon Currie, Leslie and Ray Fordyce, the boys having been trained by Mr. John Currie. Mr. Fordyce spoke on “Candles” taking as his text the words of St. Matthew 5, 14, and 16. “Ye are the light of Ihe world, let your light shine.” An earnest appeal for decisions for Christ was made. The singing of the children was | tunefully and heartily sung and created a fine atmosphere in the services. Annual Tea and Concert. The annual tea and conceit was held on Thursday evening, the tea taking place in church vestry, when a boundiful tea was enjoyed by an almost full attendance of enthusiastic! scholars. The arrangements being in the capable hands of Mesdames P. Gedye, J. Coulter, R. E. Fordyce, E. Buckeridge, E. Bowater and Miss M. Coulter. The concert, programme consisted of a repitition of several of the Sunday hymns, with the addition of recitations and songs. The Minister as superintendent presented the report and balance sheet and later distributed the prizes, each scholar receiving some recognition of his or her attendance. At the conclusion of a very pleasant function, the chairman thanked the teachers and children for responding to his attempts at training them. He mentioned the serious loss the school had sustained in the death of the- late Mr. F. W. Tostevin. who for many years had trained scholars for the anniversary service. Mr. Fordvce also thanked those who had provided and served the tea, and also the audi - ence for their attendance. Mrs. W. E. Pearce in a neat speech expressed to the Rev. R. E. Fordyce the parents’ and the audiences’ appreciation of his work in training the children and in carrying through this year’s anniversary celebrations. The programme comprised hymns by the choir, recitations bv wee Mildred Currie, Dorothy Fordvce. Nancy McCnnahie. Margaret Buckeridge. Neri Bishon. Donald McConachie. Leslie and Raymond Fordvce. Duets bv Misses Jean and Tui Masters. Merle Richardson and Hean Malone, Shirlev Bond and Tostevin. A solo by Miss Nellie Masters. Vocal trio. Gordon Currie. Leslie and Raymond Fordyce. The accomnanist.es were Messrs. M. Coulter and N. Masters. A special prize by Mr. J. H. Bonnet (Palmerston North) was awarded to Nancy McConachie. The collections were generous and will enable the teachers 1o commence lhe NewYear’s work without financial worry CRIBBAGE CU B Two teams were chosen from members of the Sandon Cribbage Club at the weekly evening A and B. the B learn securing the win by 17 games to 15. The teams w-ere, A: J. W. Meyer. F. Meyer, R. Meyer, C. P. Good, M. Sanson. R. Oppatt. and M. Cockburn. B team: J. Koster, E. J. Davev, E. N. Butler. C. Oppatt, A, Hopp. D. Hammond, N. Jifkins, and T. J. Cook. The match proved a most interesting one as the score at the interval was 12 to 4 in favour of the winning team. TAX AL BRANCH OF LABOUR PARTY MEET The monthly meeting of the N.Z Labour Party. Sandon branch, was ' held on Tuesday, Mr. E. J. Bowater presiding over a good attendance. It was decided to nominate the fol lowing candidates for the National officers for 1937: President, Mr. Bee-» Roberts, M.P.: vice-president, Mr. C. L. Hunter, M.P.; secretary. Mr. D Wilson: area officer, Mr. W. Oliver; National executive. Mrs. R. Semple, Messrs. P. Dowse. Hon. T. Brindle, C. Parlane, and P. M. Butler. The Sunday following Labour Day is to be set aside each years as a day of remembrance and members are to attend a service at the cemetery. The annual picnic of the branch is to be held at Foxton Beach on January 22. Mr. K. Cockburn presented a report concerning the la c t meeting of the Labour Regional Council, which indicated that (he organisation within the Manawatu was continuing to work smoothly. HEAD TEACHER TO BE FAREWELLED On Wednesday. December 20 the annual prize giving function of the Sanson School will be held at which opportunity will be taken on behalf of parents to farewell Miss J. Peattie. the head teacher, who is leaving to be married early in January. PERSONAL Mr. C’. L. Hunter, M.P., was re eully in lhe Sandon district where he attended to various matters and addressed a well attended meeting at the Parewanui School. An unfortunate accident occurred recently to Master Peter Meyer, when he fell from his bicycle and received rather serious injury to his foot.
