South Otago has suffered considerable damage as the result of floods caused by the heavy rain over the last two days, and had the downpour continued much longer the position must have been serious. Balclutha, this morning, presented an appearance of an island in a sea but, fortunately, the township itsell of water from the Molyneux River, escaped. The efficacy of the recem protective river works was strikingly demonstrated by the immunity ol the borough centre from flooding that caused a great deal of anxiety to stock owners outside the area al present enclosed by flood banks. The position outside the borougr was very acute last night, many far mers being up all night building u; the banks in those places where stocl tracks had provided a place for th< waters to break through. Flooding also occurred in the Wai tahuna district, many people bavin; to leave their houses. Minor slip caused blockages to some roads which are now mostly clear.
