TE AWAMUTU PROTEST

INADEQUATE POST OFFICE TE AWAMUTU, Nov. 24. A strong protest at the continued delay in the alterations and additions to the Te Awamutu Post Office was made by the Mayor, Mr G. Spinlcy at last night’s meeting of the Te Awamutu Borough Council. Mr Spinley said that some time ago he receive ! advice that tenders for a portion of the preliminary work had closed and that they were to be considered by the Cabinet in due course. “Why the tenders for a job of this nature require to be dealt with by the Cabinet is belond my comprehension,” said Mr Spinley. “The point, however, is that so far nothing has been done. How much longer are we going to allow this town to be overlooked? The population has increased over 60 per cent in the last 10 years, yet we are expected to put up with the same conditions at the post office as existed 25 years ago. “The telehphone system is antiquated and overloaded, the staff are handicapped for lack of suitable accommodation, and there is a complete lack of facilities for the general public. It is now three years since the money was placed on the Estimates and we are still waiting for the work to start.” After several members had spoken it was decided to communicate with Mr W. J. Broadfoot, M.P. for the district, asking him to use his efforts to have the work expedited.
