VICTORIA LEAGUE

GENERAL SECRETARY ARRIVES. , Miss Gertrude Drayton, C.8.E., ’ general secretary of the Victoria League in London, who is on a visit to New’ Zealand, arrived in Wanganui on Wednesday evening from Gis- ' borne to spend three days here. She ‘ is the guest of Mrs. N. R. Bain, StJohn’s Hill, president of the Wanganui branch of the Victoria League. During Miss Drayton’s stay in the city she will be entertained by the Victoria League Council, and yesterday was the guest of a member for lunch. During the morning the visitor was an interested onlooker at the packing up of Christmas parcels to send out-back and to the Leper Island. In the afternoon, Mrs. Bain invited the council members to meet Miss Drayton at a gathering given at her home on St. John’s Hill, when an interesting few hours were spent by those present. To-day Miss Gibbons will be hostess at morning tea, and Mrs. C. G. Ross will entertain Miss Drayton at luncheon at her home, “Leetham.” This afternoon members of the Victoria League will have the opportunity of meeting Miss Drayton at a garden party being given in her honour by Mrs. A. Hatrick, senr., St. John’s Hill. Victoria League Work. One of the activities of the Victoria League and one which brings happiness to many lonely people is the sending of Christmas parcels to lonely I outposts of New Zealand and to the I Leper Island. To collect the gifts is | a big undertaking, while the packing | of the articles means a few hours of I strenuous work. Yesterday was packi ing day and in the Victoria League I rooms members of the committee I were busy at tables making up the I parcels of books, etc., to despatch to I lighthouses, out-back settlers and their children. Numerous other gifts were being neatly wrapped all ready for packing in the cases to be forwarded to the Leper Island. There wlas a tine collection of toys, games, books, children’s books and articles of all kinds. This splendid work has been made possible by the generosity of friends and members. Among those who assisted with gifts were pupils of Miss Craig’s School, Tawhero School, Mrs. P. Graham, Misses M. and I. Walker, Mrs. P. Graham, Mrs. D. Mason, Mrs. O. Lewis, Mrs. T. C. Jones, Miss Meuli, Miss Higginson and members of the committee.
