ON THE TURF

"KESTREL”

AT LEVIN TO-DAY PRELUDE TO FEILDING PROSPECTS REVIEWED Serving as a prelude to the Feeding meeting, set down for next weekend, the Levin Racing Club's one-day spring fixture to-day is going to attract a good deal of attention, for among the satisfactory fields engaged there are many likely candidates for nearby engagements. Several Wanganui horses will sport silk, and it is likely that the contingerU: of Wanganui followers of form will be larger than usual, for Levin is handily situated at a comfortable distance from this district, some 60 miles away. Advice from Levin yesterday was to the effect that the course was in excellent order following a heavyshower on Wednesday night, and the going is certain to be very fast again, for the Levin track at its best is like the proverbial “greased lightning.” The totalisator will be operated under the single-pool system, with dividends in the proportion of 75 per cent, and 25 per cent, for first and second respectively. The dividend indicator will be used in the principal event. A weaker field than could be anticipated is engaged in the principal event, the Letwn Handicap, for which only six are carded. Grand Jury is topweight with 9.0, just 211 b. above the minimum. At his best the aged Grandcourt gelding would make light of the task, but his form at Bulls indicated that he has slipped. Rona Bay is reported from Trentham to have shaped well on her return from Riccarton, where the New Zealand Cup was included among the events contested by the Musketoon mare. She may be a surprise packet for backers. Royal Secret ran an honest race in the McKelvie Memorial at Bulls, where she led into the straight and eventually went under by the narrowest of margins in third place. Round Score showed signs of returning form when he nearly- won the Ling Memorial at the recent Otaki meeting. Snowball will be an absentee. It would not surprise to find Terry playing a prominent part. However, the better-per-formed division may be preferred. It is a better field that will contest ihe other open event, the McDonald Memorial, though the dozen carded will be somewhat reduced in number as Royal Secret has been scratched and Grand Jury is in the earlier race. Jubilee Song will require to improve to have a chance, though he won this race last year. Lone Raider makes a reappearance on the course on which he won his first race, three years ago, but he has not sported silk in New Zealand since his return from Australia. Beau Gallante won over hurdles at Trentham but may not be suited by the course. Full Throttle has not had the best of luck lately, though it may be his turn. Gold Mission ran such 'a good race in the sprint at Waverley on Labour Day that she will not lack friends to-day. Lord Moutoa may make amends for his Bulls defeat, for on that occasion he did not have the best of luck. Hunting Lodge generally runs a decent race and she is down far enough in the weights to be troublesome. Of the trio on the minimum Darecourt and Blygain, the latter a Gisborne visitor, must be accorded good chances. Gold Mission, Hunting Lodge and Lord Moutoa appear likely. The Maiden Race field is a large one, and it appears as if Millie and Reserve Bank are going to engage most attention. Three performers with good chances in the Manukau Hack Hurdles are Limulus, Saltspray and Otauru King, though Evermore is a good jumper. Several will be backed in the Weraroa Hack Handicap, for which event

the likely division may include Airing, Red Sand, The Buzzer, Blygain (if started, Cloudy Bay, Windward and Export. However, the defections may clarify the issue, especially as The Buzzer claims an engagement in the hack sprint, for which Quake, Happy Hunting, Gladium, Cardsharper, Eara and Sanherin may also be fancied. The scratching of Lady Ina leaves ten in the Lake Hack Handicap, witji the Riccarton winner Geitel heading rhe list. Others that may go well are Terry, Earl Colossus, Essex, Bacchus Marsh and Ingenuity. In the five-furlong flurry which concludes the programme Peter Beckford, Lifeguard, Hine Ra. Gladium. Collodion, Mittie, Cardsharper and Gay Step may be prominent. The following may be well supported in their respective engage-! ments to-day: - 12.0: Maiden Race —Reserve Bank, I Mittie, Sam’s Choice. 12.40: Manakau Hack Hurdles.—Limu- i lus. Saltspray, Otauru King. 1.20: Weraroa Hack Handicap.—Liane,! Cloudy Bay, Airing. 2.0: Levin Handicap.—Royal Secret,! Rona Bay. Round Score. 2.45: Mako Mako Hack Handicap.—! The Buzer, Cardsharper, Quake. 3.30: Lake Hack Handicap.—Geitel, | Earl Colossus, Essex. 4.15: J. R. McDonald Memorial.— Gold | Mission, Hunting Lodge. Lord Mou- I loa. 5.5: Hokio Hack Handicap.—Card- | sharper, Hine Ra. Peter Beckford.! Following is the list of acceptors:— i MAIDEN RACE.

I NEW PLYMOUTH TRACK HORSES I OR LEVIN W ORK. Rain during the night had left the tracks at New Plymouth slightly or the slow side for training operation; on Thursday morning when all the galloping took place on the course proper with the flags well out, states the Daily News. Red Sand moved evenly over live furlongs in Imin. 6sec., the first three taking 3Ssec. This was quite a good effort and Red Sand carried out het task in good style. Royal Secret occupied Imin. 6 4-ssec for the same distance but continued on for another furlong and a-half. This mare is looking well and is veryfit at present. Mowgli jumped off three lengths in front of Bantry and Cardsharper at the five furlongs and still had a length advantage at the finish, the distance taking Imin. 6 l-ssec. Mowgli moved freely but Bantry and Cardsharper were going strongly at the end. Drathula and Clessamor were on terms a length and a-half in front of

1 Don Erma at the conclusion of half a J mile in 54 l-ssec. Drathula put plenty of dash into her work while Clessamor showed that he is coming back to his ■ best. ; The Bronze Eagle filly in H. Gray's stable shaped well over two furlongs ■ in company with the Captain Bunsby gelding, the pair running the distance in 2Ssec. Refresher covered a circuit at a good three-quarter pace. There was little fast work after breakfast. Bonny Glow did half a mile in 58sec., but was not hurried. Bonny Glow's stable mate Lady Kyra, was allotted a working gallop over a circuit, the last five furlongs taking Imin. 13see. Three-year-old filly Dawn Star by Lord Warden-Gold Dawn, who has rejoined Mantle's team, was given easy exercise. She is not likely to race before the autumn. Aussie Ra and Davistoek were restricted to easy pace work. Plans regarding Mowgli have been changed and he will accompany CardI sharper to Levin. He schooled well on Wednesday morning. Eagle's Eye will not make the trip. L. Clifford will ride Feldberg at Te Rapa. SNOWBALL SUSSING TRIP PALMERSTON N., Nov. 20.

The Woodville - trained gelding Snowball is in the list of acceptors for the Levin Handicap, but he pulled up sore after work the other morning and his Levin trip is off. Full Throttle is to make the trip to take his place in the field for the J. R. McDonald Memorial. He was galloped six furlongs yesterday and hit out freely. He pulled up well and looks well. Otaki is another Woodville candidate for Levin. He went a fair race at Wellington and he has gone on the right way since. There was little fresh in the work of the Levin candidates at Awapuni , yesterday morning. The majority of the horses are well forward as the ■ result of recent racing and therefore 1 do not require a great deal of galloping. Additional riding engagements for ■ Levin are:—B. 'h. Morris. Roval Secret; L. A. Pine, Gold Nymph; and [j • J- Leach, Hunting Lodge. WOODVILLE CLUB !■ NOMINATIONS DI E MONDAY. T | The Woodville summer meeting is 1 i being held on Thursday and Saturday, December 10 and 12, and nomina- 5 ■ tions for all events are due to close • next Monday evening. —— J
