DIRTY STREETS
EFFECT OF SHORTER HOURS MATTER TO BE LOOKED INTO. As the outcome of representations made by Cr. J. S. Siddells at the City Council meeting last night, the tidiness of Wanganui's main streets is to receive attention. Cr. Siddells referred to recent cor- > respondence in the Press complain- i ing of the untidy state of the Avenue. The Mayor: It is probably more the fault of the system than of officials or employees. The city engineer (Mr. L. F. Row) that the untidy state of the Avenue on a Monday was probably due to the altered duty rosters to comply with a forty-hour week, hich had dispensed with the Sunday night washing down. To reintroduce that would definitely mean more expenditure.
