BIRD-LIFE

PLANTING OF NATIVE TREE. < Special to “Chronicle.! RAETIHI, Oct. 20, Each year the Waimarino Acclimatisation Society have taken upon ■ themselves the duty of supplying gratuitously plants and honcy-produc-ing shrubs to residents of the district ! with the object of supplying food for the native bird-life. That their efforts have not been in vain may be gauged from the fact that where these shrubs have been successfully grown, both the tui and bell-bird have put in an appearance, and this right in the township. Further evidence of the useful work oeing done by the society comes from Te Poi, Matamata. where the schoolmaster there, learning of the Waimarino Acclimatisation Society's activities on behalf of the Bird Protection Society, wrote expressing pleasure to come in contact with those who had at heart the preservation of the native fauna and flora. In his letter the schoolmaster said: “There were thousands throughout New Zealand who will enthusiastically support all who have the energy and goodwill to move in the direction of preserving the bird-life.” The writer was making a start right away in planting shelter growths in the school grounds for the introduction of bird-supporting shrubs and t rees. The council of the society are gratified to learn that their efforts are being appreciated outside as well as inMde the district.
