PROFESSIONAL TITLE

NORTH ISLAND CHAMPION RACE AT AUCKLAND [Per Press Association] AUCKLAND, Oct. 18. The North Island and Auckland provincial professional cycling championship was decided on Saturday over an 80 miles course from Hamilton to Auckland. Fifty riders took part. The race resulted in a win for the 18-years-old R. Horscroft, with H. Stacey second. Both belong to the Auckland Club. J. McClean (Pukekohe) was third. Fastest time and the North Island title was won by the New Plymouth rider G. L. Parker off the lOmin. mark, who rode the distance in 3 hours 25 minutes 25 seconds, breaking H. G. Watson's record by 6sec. The Auckland provincial championship was won by L. Thomas in 3 hours 36 minutes 44 seconds, and the junior championship by H. Stacey in 3 hours 45 minutes 28 seconds.

LONG ROAD RACE WARNAMBOOL TO MELBOURNE 21-YEAR-OLD WINNER Received Oct. 18, 7.5 p.m. MELBOURNE, Oct. 18. The Warnambool to Melbourne road race, of 154 miles, was won by the 21-year-old Australian J. McEvoy, whose handicap was 43 minutes. McEvoy’s time was 7 hours 17 minutes 28 seconds. The Victorians T. Garratte and E. Gregory, both off 40 minutes, were second and third respectively. There were two lengths between first and second and the same distance between second and third. Fastest time went to the Victorian A. Angus off scratch. His time was 6 hours 4 minutes 50 seconds. Angus won the Australian professional road championship.

HUBERT OPPERMAN’S RIDE BRISBANE TO SYDNEY RECORD TIME CUT IN HALF Received Oct. 18, 7.5 p.m. SYDNEY, Oct. 18. Hubert Opperman cycled from Brisbane to Sydney, non-stop, a distance of 651 miles, in 47 hours 10 minutes, breaking the record by 45 hours 9 minutes. Opperman was so overcome by fatigue that he had to be held up while a laurel wreath was placed around his neck. The previous record was 92 hours 19 minutes, established by Lee Cecil in 1926.
