CROQUET CLUB OPENING

M ANGAMI EAST At the Wanganui East Croquet Club grounds, situated on Williamson’s Park. Wanganui East, the members of the club formerly opened the 1936-37 season on Thursday afternoon. Mrs A. E. Halligan, president of the club, who was presented with a bouquet, received the guests. Later, in welcoming Mrs A. Crawford, president of the Croquet Association, Mrs Halligan thanked all for attending, especially the representatives of other clubs. ' She took the opportunity of thanking the men .helpers who had put in such hard work at the grounds, saying the members owed a debt of gratitude to Messrs Halligan, Burns and Harris. Mrs Crawford, in declaring the season open, referred to the wonderful improvement of the lawns. She said it was hardly possible to think they saw last year. Mrs Crawford spoke of the joy that the game of croquet gave to women and the great advantages of the game as it also teaches them to be good sports. She wished the club every success and lots of new members. Mrs Crawford was the recipient of a lovely bouquet. Mr Harris paid a tribute to Mr Halligan whom, he said, had been responsible for the bulk of the work, and on behalf of the ladies he thanked Mr Halligan and Mr Burns for all they had done for the club. Afternoon tea, served by the members, was in charge of Mesdames Harris, Goodyer and Lower. The visitors were entertained with various competitions, the following members being in charge: Clock, Mesdames Taylor and Burns; golf croquet, Mrs Perry; crazy hoops, Mrs A. B. Currin; ladder, Mrs Chapman; skittles, Mrs Brawshaw. A produce stall, in charge of Mrs Ginn, .was well patronised. Among others present were Mesdames G. A. McDougal, Uttley, W. J. Stone, Treloar, Bassett Smith, Warnock (2), Aiken, Ryder, Harris, A. E. Carpenter, Dixon, Bourgeois, Orchard, Congreve, Snelling, Perrett. Tonks, Gillespie, Clarke, Nicholson, Redpath, M. Taylor, La Roche, Remington, Ralph, Bauld, Langton, Stowers, Gallop, Brass, Bartlett, Noble, Phyzacklea, Shaw, Hamilton, Brider, Lord, Donald, R. Bell, Haines, Andrews, Hicks, Walker, G. P. Williamson, Gilbertson, Bamber, Downey, J.
