Meteorological Office, Wellington, Friday, Oct. 16, 4 p.m. General Situation.—A depression is passing eastwards off the South Island to-day, while an anti-cyclone extends across northern New Zealand. Fresh depressions are situated respectively over South Eastern Australia and off the Queensland coast. Forecast.—Winds: South-westerly predominating, moderate to strong generally and of gale force in places on the east coast of the South Island and the Cook Strait area, but decreasing and later veering to northerlies. Seas (New Zealand waters): Rough south of Castiepoint and about Cook and Foveaux Straits and rather rough on the west coast; elsewhere, moderate; Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate and variable winds at first in the northern portion and southwesterlies in the central and southern portions; later, winds becoming north-easterly or northerly generally and freshening; seas moderate to rather rough. Weather: Changeable at first and with scattered showers, especially in eastern areas, but for the most part fair to fine.
