WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

WESTMERE MEETING At the October meeting of Westmere Institute, Miss Smith presided ' over a good attendance of members and' visitors. A hearty welcome was extended to all, the president specially welcoming several visitors from Okoia W.I. and also Mrs Williams, of Papua, who later addressed the meeting, and Mrs Bullock, who demonstrated spinning. Invitations to the Turakina birth- > day party on October 15 and to an ; opeji evening at Okoia on November i 7 were received. It was decided to buy health stamps ; for institute correspondence in order to help the health stamp campaign. , The half-yearly meeting of the federation will be held at Fordell on October 20, and members are re- j minded of the competition for best : piece of handwork, which must have been done this year. Goods from the , Soldiers’ Civil Re-establishment League were on sale and met with a good demand. Two items by the Westmere vocal trio were very much enjoyed. Mrs Williams then gave a most interesting and vivid description of life ' in Papua, especially the Island of Samari, where her home is situated. This talk was much appreciated and enjoyed by all. An enjoyable afternoon tea was served by the following hostesses: Mesdames Blennerhassett, Dickinson, Murchison. Simmons, and Misses F. and I. Mullins, after which Mrs Bullock capably demonstrated the carding and spinning of wool and was followed with close interest. The monthly points competition: Best jar of marmalade, Mrs H. Taylor 1, Mrs Ryland 2. Mrs Cooper 3. The points competition for September, best banner design, resulted: Miss C. Brownlie 1, Miss E. Smith 2, Mrs Lambert and Miss Dawes 3, equal. Mrs Simmons proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mesdames Williams and Bullock, the vicol trio, and Mrs Budge, who kindly judged the marmalade, and this was carried in the usual way. The arts and crafts circle will meet on Thursday, October 22, when brass and pewter, sylk art. and paper pictures will be demonstrated. Members were urged to attend the social afternoon to be tendered to Mrs Alfred Watt in Wanganui on November 4. At the November meeting an exhibition of Maori handcrafts will be held and all members who have specimens of these crafts arc asked to bring them along. W.C.T.U. WANGANUI EAST DIVISION The Wanganui East Women's Christian Temperance Union held its monthly meeting in St. Alban’s Hall, Mrs Day being in the chair. Mrs Hoare read St. John's Gospel, chapter 4, and Mrs Day led the devotions. After the minutes of the previous meeting had been read and confirmed correspondence was read from Mrs Hussey and the relatives of the late Mrs Redpath. Mrs Day reported attending social afternoon and birthday party at Aramoho. Several items of special interest—the extending of licences to tourist houses and to the Chateau, also the resolution adopted by the Maori Federation re the evil effects, physical, moral, and mental, of the overindulgence in alcoholic liquor on the morale of the race, etc., were freely discussed by members. It was announced that the annual cradle roll party would be held on November 21, and preliminary arrangements were made. Mrs Scott was elected delegate to the district convention to be held in St. Paul’s Hall on October 21. Pledge night will be held by the Band of Hope on Tuesday, October 27. The treasurer then read a statement re the funds, and £2 were voted to headquarter’s fund, £4 Us 6d to the organising fund, and 10s each to St. Alban’s Guild and St. Alban’s trustees. A collection was taken for Maori work. Members had afternoon tea and had a social hour. Then the following programme was rendered: Recitation, “The Child Musician,” Miss Una Colemar; song, “Robin Adair,” Madame Adamson; recitation, “The Road to Heaven,” Mrs Lumley.’ A vote of thanks to the performers, proposed by Mrs Day, was carried by acclamation, and the meeting closeo with the Benediction.
