TENNIS CLUB. , Mr. G. R. Taylor presided at a com- , mittee meeting of the Patea Tennis Club last Thursday. Mesdames White- , 'head, Baker, Miss Gibbings and Messrs j Fowler, Finlayson, Whitehead, Kearney, Tulloch and Cross (secretary) . v.-c:r also present. It was decided W> re-engage Mr. ( Lamb as caretaker for the coming season, and Messrs. Whitehead and Taylor were appointed ground supervisors. A working bee was arranged lor Saturday, October 10, when it was hoped to make a good start towards < putting the courts in order. Provided that the courts were by ■ that time in playing order, Saturday, October 24, was decided upon for the club's opening day, when a Yankee 1 tournament would be held. ’ It was resolved that a list of all • club members be placed in the club- - house, and when subscriptions were paid this fact be recorded alongside J the member’s name on the. list. 1 With a view to encouraging the junior players it was decided to make available whatever tuition possible, so that these members could thereby improve their standard of play. It was thought that the more experienced players would be able to help m this I respect and the fact was to be made 1 known. ' It was decided, on the motion or ‘ Mrs. Baker, that organised sets be 1 made up by the committee from 2 p.m. to 4.40 p.m. on Saturdays, the ■ idea being that members would then 1 secure more even games and this would be to the advantage of every- I one. A time limit of 20 minutes was I imposed on these sets. The following trophies were don- . a ted.—Eva Whitehead: A trophy for ( the ladies’ handicap singles. Mr. G. R. Taylor: Most improved lady player. 1 Mr. E. Whitehead: Men’s handicap < singles. It was decided that a ladies’ I and men’s championship be held. The following additional new mem- 1 bers were elected:—Mrs. Bostock, Miss ' Whitehead, Messrs Cardiff and Nichol- 1 son. — < SCHOOL DANCE. I On Friday evening the Patea Town Hall was thronged with a galaxy of children for the fancy dress dance arranged by the public school in aid of the jubilee fund. Every conceivable kind of costume was worn and great credit is due to the teachers who ; taught the various dances, and to the . head teacher, Mr. C. P. Bates, for the general organisation. Vinsen’s orches- : tra supplied suitable music. The infants’ special dances were “Pop Goes the Weasel,” "David of Greeky,” : "Pigeon House,” and “Handkerchief Dance.” Standards I, II and 111 gave "Ace of Diamonds.” “Shoemakers’ : Dance.” Standards 111, IV, V and VI, “Skating Dance.” A delightful supper was served the children under the direction of Mrs. R. E. Moore, and was made possible by the generosity of the parents. The floral decorations were the work of Mrs. R. M. Stevens. A large number of grown-ups took the floor after the children.
