The Appreciation of Art
Be sincere in all forms of Art, and by this I mean that if you have not the power of being creative, you should be glad that you have the power of being appreciative, but be so only through your own eyes, writes Sir Seymour Hicks, the celebrated British actor. Don’t admire Rembrandt because others do it if you can’t understand him. Be happy in the greater beauties you see, even at the Royal Academy. There is no disgrace in it. After all
you have the satisfaction of being ynf!, and you have a perfect right to hope that every modern artist should get his deserts. If you delight in an actor that others see little to admire in. go still and continue to be delighted, and don t .q ashamed of your ideal Never 100 t life through other men’s spectacle.- <» false man is a happy man, and n< .hi is so false as he who pretends to like the things that ether people say be ought to like.
