HITHER AND THITHER ; Dance at Nukuniaru. i At a dance to be held on Tuesday, October 13 in the Nukuniaru Hall, the music will be played by Hooker’s I Merrymakers, featuring Stuart Gor- . don in special numbers. Novelty dances, together with a good floor, should attract numerous patrons. Bus , leaves Hodson’s garage at 7.30 p.m. Social Evening. Mr and Mrs Sid Boobyer were host I and hostess at an evening held at their home, Paparangi, on Saturday, October 3, when a very enjoyable time was spent by those present. The evening was passed in dancing, community singing and a card tournament, which was won by Mrs Bellve (Hawera), and Mr Wilcox, senr. (Nukumaru). The Monte Carlo was won by Miss Joan Carson and Mr Sid Wilcox. The orchestra was composed of piano-accordion. Concertina and mouth-organ solos were given by Mr Sid Boobyer, Mr Bill Kelly and Mrs Stockman; duet by Mr George Richards and Mr Jack Howard. Among! those present were Mr and Mrs I Bellve, senr. CENTRAL BRANCH The usual monthly meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperence Union was held in Trinity Parlour at 2.30 on Thursday, thirteen members being present, also two visitors. The devotions were led by Mrs. Begg; The president, Mrs. Duxfield, was in the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, after which all stood and reaffirmed the pledge of total abstinence. The temperance fact, read by Mrs. A. Morrison, was a statement by Dr. T. A. Dukes, Croydon Police surgeon, who says; "The effect of a little drink does not make a man feel drunk, but it makes him slow in coming to a conclusion or doing anything unexpected. He may be all right until an accident comes along. In an emergency he is too late. He cannot find his brake without looking to see where his hand is going.” Mrs. Duxfield told of the good work being done amongst the Maori people by the various W.C.T.U. Unions throughout New Zealand! Mrs. Begg was elected delegate to the district convention to be held on October 21, at Wanganui, under the auspices of the Gonville branch. It was decided to make the November meeting a "pay-up” social afternoon. The meeting closed with the Benediction. KAITOKE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE There was a good attendance for members’ day, and after the usual business was disposed of, the chair was taken by Mrs. Higgins, who is to be complimented for the way she carried out her duties. She was ably assisted by Mrs. Day, who acted as secretary. Mrs. Gillies and Mrs. Day were chosen as delegates to represent the institute at the half-yearly council meeting at Fordell. It was decided that the December meeting take the form of an open evening, with a Xmas tree for the I children. Members are reminded of i Mrs. Watt’s visit to Wanganui on November 4. A very interesting demonstration of ] fancy cushion making was given by | Mrs. Rowan, and was keenly watched by all. Members are grateful to Miss M. Swann, who kindly entertained with some of her pupils, whose dancing delighted all present. The dancers were: Patty White (fling), Elaine Blake (operatic), June Burston, and Rene May (duo). Competition results were: Bouquet (Mrs. Gillies’ trophy), Mrs. Garner 1, Mrs. Bradshaw 2, Mrs. Owles 3; decorated vase (garden circle), Mrs. Garner 1, • Mrs. Pritchard 2, Mrs. Scott 3; ginger ; nuts, Mrs. Cooper 1, Miss Pritchard 2; i apron, Mrs. Hunt 1, Mrs. Day 2, Mrs. * Owles 3. Mrs. Gillies’ trophy for the past six months was won by Mrs. • Owles. Competitions for November will be I a seagrass stool or family cake, pot ’■ plant (garden circle), tall vase of , flowers, any foliage (Mrs. Gillies’ ; trophy). Hostesses for next month are Mes- 1 dames Pritchard, Rider, and Higgins.
