ATHLETICS

WANGANUI CLUB JUBILEE YEAR ENTERED PREPARATIONS FOR SEASON. There was a large attendance of members at the 60th. annual meeting of the Wanganui Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club last night. Mr. A. C. Bourgeois presided, and extended a welcome to the old and new members present. The large attendance, he said, augured well for the coming season. The annual report (previously published) and the balance-sheet were adopted. The following new members were elected: P. Wallace, E. Peters, L. Carthy, J. Carr, R. Jeffs, B. Simmons, R. O’Donnell, B. Corby, J. Briscoe, P. Foley, C. Jeffries, J. Johnston and R. King. Officers Elected. The following officers were elected for the year:—Patron, Mrs. A. J. Weekes (re-elected); president, Mr. A. C. Bourgeois (re-elected); vicepresidents, Messrs. W. G. Cooper, C. R. White, A. Coe, J. D. Crowley, J. Goss and R. Dawson; club captain, L. J. Stephenson; vice-captain, Mr. J. Wade; starter, Mr. G. Benson; assistant starter, Mr. L. Garrick; running handicapper, Mr. G. Benson; cycling handicapper, to be appointed; secretary, Mr. T. McCashin, treasurer, Mr. A. McCormick; delegate to the subcentre, Mr. J. Morgan; committee, Messrs. A. C. Danielson, E. A. Brown, W. Pidwell, W. J. Galvin and K. Broughton; auditor, Mr. L. B. Burgess. Saturday Events. Mr. L. Burgess said that he had considered during the year that it would be a good move during the coming season if sports meetings were held on Saturday afternoons at Spriggens Park instead of holding evening meetings. Mr. J. Wade said that if this were done there'would be no provision for cycling. Mr. A. C. Danielson said that a good cycle track could not be prepared at Spriggens Park. The Wanganui Metropolitan Rugby Union was prepared to meet the club in the matter of Spriggens Park. Mr. A. C. Bourgeois suggested that the matter could be left to the incoming committee on which the cyclists were now well represented. Mr. J. Wade said that the cyclists would prefer to hold their races on the banked track at Cook’s Gardens. Mr. D. Evans suggested that it might be possible to continue the evening meetings and hold an occasional meeting at Spriggens Park on Saturday afternoon. The general opinion of the meeting was that the evening meetings should be held as usual. Mr. Bourgeois said that the committee had arranged with the Carnival Committee for the staging of an open meeting on January 2,193 G. The trophies and all the work would be undertaken by the Carnival Committee, the club merely running the event. Applications for permission to hold the event had been made to the cycling and athletic sub-commit-tees. Diamond Jubilee. Mr. Bourgeois said that the club would be celebrating its diamond jubilee during the coming season, and it was up to the club to hold a suitable meeting to mark the event. He thought that it would be a good move to have the Wellington and Kiwi Clubs visit the city for the jubilee meeting.

Mr. D. Evans thought that the meeting would have to be more than an inter-club event. He considered that the matter should be referred to the incoming committee for consideration. An open meeting would be a bigger draw than an inter-club event. It was decided to extend an invitation to the Wellington and Kiwi Clubs to pay a visit to Wanganui for the annual triangular contest before Christmas and that the jubilee meeting should be an open event.
