VISITOR IN DISTRESS

Many Wanganui residents were awakened at 5 a.m. on Monday morning by the fall of torential rain on the roof, but an Avenue resident was awakened at this hour by the ringing of his front door bell. Upon answering the door, a woman asked whether the occupant had any stimulant in the house for a serious case of illness near by; the Avenue resident, all sympathy, immediately produced and handed to the woman what remained of a bottle of “Old Scotch” and quite enough to delight the hearts of several in kilts. The woman in haste departed to her sick friend with many thanks and assurances that the kindness would be returned immediately the hotels opened, but the benefactor is still waiting.

A description of this woman may be of benefit to Wanganui residents—about 50 years of age, dull sandy hail parted in centre, heavy sallow features, thick ankles, weight about 14 stone, dressed in brown specked skirt and brown cardigan. She is of rather good address.
