IN DRIVE FOR RECRUITS
EXAMPLE OF GOVERNMENT. BRISBANE, Aug. 8. In its drive for recruits for the I militia, the Federal Government is going to set private employers an example. The Prime Minister, Mr. Lyons, announced that all Commonwealth departments would be instructed to encourage enlistment of eligible members of their staffs. Leave for camps and schools of insriuction would be granted, Mr. Lyons said, and this leave would not be deducted from annual holidays. It was hoped that the example of the Federal Government would be followed as far as possible by private employers, so that the drive to build up the militia forces to maximum strength would be successful. 200 Enlist in Sydney. The drive for militia recruits has resulted in more than 200 enlistments in Sydney in two weeks, but more men are required. The air defence units—the AntiAircraft Battery at Mosman and tne Fortress Company at Victoria Bai’racks—require over 150 men. On Wednesday night the Fortress Company is forming an Anti-Aircraft Searchlight Section for which qualifications in electrical enginering or internal combustion engines are required. New Country Units. Radio sections of the Signals at Crow’s Nest and Moore Park require 60 men. At least 50 men are needed in every battalion in the metropolitan and Newcastle areas. Shire councils, pastoral associations, and returned soldiers’ organisations are behind the move to form infantry units at Inverell, Manilla, Taree, Kempsey, Bowrai, Moss Vale, Mitta- ! gong.
