-V —— PROPOSAL IN PARLIAMENT MATTER TO BE CONSIDERED DEPARTMENTAL ESTIMATES [Per Press Association] WELLINGTON, Aug. 28. When the Police Department estimates were being considered in the House of Representatives this afternoon, Hon. J. G. Cobbe (Opp., Orua) suggested that it would be a good idea to make provision for women police, especially in the cities. Rev. A. H. Nordmeyer (Govt., Oamaru) asked the Minister to give his attention to information he had received to the effect that police raids in connection with after-hours trading n were coniined for the great ?art to hotels frequented by ordinary people, while those catering for well-to-do people were seldom affected. Mr. W. J. Polson (Opp., Stratford) drew attention to the increasing prevalence of sheep-stealing, especially in the North Island. Sneep were being taken in small quantities, more particularly in the back country districts, and in some case vigilance com mittees had been set up and rewards were offered for ..he apprehension oi the culprits. He suggested that some thing should be done in the direction of controlling roads in the back country. This could be done through sto-s and station agents, who could be empowered to inspect stock being driven on the roads. The Minister, Hon. P. Fraser, in reply, said that with regard to sheepstealing, he would be pleased for the Commissioner to meet any body Mr Polson suggested and see if some arrangement could be come to in th* •natter. Dealing with the question of women police, Mr. Fraser said it would be ?onsidered and if it were proved that they would be useful the matte. Aould be gone into.
