SPECTACULAR FIRE

BLAZE AT DUNEDIN • [ Ter Press elation ) DUNEDIN, Aug. 25. ’ One of lhe most spectacular fires seen in Dunedin for some years oc- ’ eurred this evening when the premises of the Iron and Steel Company ot ' New Zealand, Ltd., in R.att.ray Street, ' were extensively damaged. ’ Darkness had fallen only a short time when flames broke through the skylights in lhe roof and huge columns of smoke through which sheets of flame broke from time to lime could be seen from all the ! higher parts of the city and surroundi ing hills. No estimate of the extent of the damage could be arrived at to-night, j but it is known to be heavy. The inj lerior of the building, together with stock and fittings, suifered severely. The alarm was given at 6.32 p.m. and when the brigade arrived the interior of the building was found to be a raging inferno. The brigade attacked the fire from three points. ITw o leads of hose were used on the front through the door and windows and two were taken down the side of the building, one being brought into use through a doorway leading into the middle of the store and the othei in the workshop where it was found possible to reach the seat of the fire. * The work of the brigade w’as ex-

r tremely efficient and the men had control of the fire in a surprisingly short time. The roof was damaged in only one place at the back, the remainder remaining intact.
