GENERAL NEWS “It was a pleasure to be associated with your council in improving the water supply of the town,” stated a letter received by the Marton Borough Council from Messrs. A. D. Riley and Co., the contractors for the new filters at the waterworks. The letter was in reply to the council’s forwarding a cheque for the balance of the contract, following an entirely satisfactory analysis of the water by the Health Department. The Works Committee reported on its investigation of a request for drainage of a property on French Street into the footpath channel, which would have required deepening, that the request was not a reasonable one. The council resolved that it regretted being unable to comply with the request, and that the open drain already made by the occupier was a danger to the public safety and must be piped and filled in. ; HARRIERS FOR CHAMPIONSHIP The West Coast team for the New Zealand harrier championships to be held at Auckland, leaves Marton by the express this evening. There are four Martonians in the party—F. Hill, D. Smith, G. Bromley and W. Edge—while Mr. D. Macpherson is manager. It is expected that there will be a large crowd of enthusiasts at the station to wish the team well. INDUSTRIAL LEGISLATION As the new industrial legislation is causing some concern as to its application in regard to industrial unions, etc., all interested will be well advised to hear Messrs Queenan, Robertson and Scott in the Jockey Club’s rooms, Marton, to-morrow (Thursday) night. These gentlemen are well in the forefront in their knowledge of the latest developments and will be well worth hearing.
