WAGON DERAILED
MISHAP -NEAR HALCOMBE SEVEN TRAINS DELAYED I Per Press Association] PALMERSTON N., Aug. 6. Rail traffic was disorganised until 10 a.m. as the result of a 36-ton petrol - wagon on a goods train leaving Palmerston North for the north at 1 a.m. ; breaking an axle and being derailed , near Halcombe. The usual procedure ■ is to unload a derailed wagon and . jack it off the rails, but the petrol ■ prevented the doing of this. Both of i the south-bound expresses were held , at Marton to enable passengers to be > transhipped in daylight. The Main ) Trunk Limited expresses were both i 3i hours late in passing here. Seven l trains were affected after the accident . occurred. » Advice has been received locally > that the wagon derailed has now been restored to the line by a crane brought from the north. s St. John’s Hill School ’ Mr J. B. Cotterill, M.P. for Wangai nui, has telegraphed the “Chronicle” i as follows: “Cabinet has approved of . a grant for additional classroom accommodation to be provided at the ? St. John’s Hill School.” 1 s Acts of V andalism ” Acts of vandalism at Castlecliff, the s work of irresponsible persons, came ‘ in for some trenchant criticism by Dr. I G. J. Adams at last night’s annual 0 meeting of the Wanganui Tourist and s Development League. The speaker remarked that the league could develop Castlecliff as one of the tourist attractions of the city and added ’ that in this connection pohutukawas “ were planted on Arbor Day. The I doctor then referred to the fate of several Norfolk pines, which had II been planted previously. Some had been uprooted and taken away and those remaining were destroyed. It seemed scandalous that Wanganui v citizens could perpetrate such acts of 'f wanton vandalism. “Surely it could n be prevented if our people down there e could help us by protecting such property,” Dr. Adams asserted.
