, MINISTER’S FUNERAL REV. G. H. LAWRENCE TRIBUTE BY ARCHDEACON YOUNG Impressive ceremony attended the funeral of the Rev. George Howard Lawrence, formerly priest in charge of All Saints' Anglican Church, Wanganui East, who died suddenly at his home last Tuesday evening. The cortege left his residence, 41 Duncan Street, at 3.15 p.m. yesterday and on arrival at Christ Church, where a I service was held, was met by the | choirs of All Saints’ and Christ j Church, a parade of returned soldiers, i representatives of the Masonic fra- | ternity in Wanganui and the follow--1 ing clergy: Canons H. Watson (Mar- ‘ ton). D. B. Malcolm (Hawera) and W. |G. Williams (Wanganui) and the i Revs. W. Lambert. C. W. Solomon. P. A. Stanley (Waverley). Walton. W. Langston (Eltham) and W. Raine I (Marton). I In addition, tepresentative clergy of I all religious bodies in Wanganui were present. Pastor Fretwell and the Rev. IR. Dudley represented the Ministers' Association. The church was crowded by a congregation from all sections I of the communitv. including representatives of the Intermediate School ! Committee. Bible classes, Sunday I schools and other church organisai tions. As the procession moved up to II he chancel, the hymn. “The King of i Love My Shepherd." was rendered Iby the choirs. The service was taken bv the Ven. Archdeacon J. R. Young. M.A. The 130th Psalm was sung and : the lesson was taken from the 15th i Chapter of the Ist Epistle to the I Corinthians. • In his address the Archdeacon I spoke a few words of appreciation of lhe work and fellowship of the Rev. I Lawrence, who had been his colleague I for 18 months. He had always been | a good fnena and very loyal. They all felt, very keenly, the loss of his physical presence, but they did not grieve as men without hope, and looked forward to renewing their friendship and comradeship when they, too. were released from the burden of this flesh into the glorious liberty of the children of God. “We tealise very deeply, no matter how sure our hope is, a passing which leaves a terrible gap of loneliness and sorrow. And so we extend to his widow and daughter, and all upon whom sorrow has fallen through this bereavement, our very sincere and loving sympathy and the assurance of our prayers," the Archdeacon concluded. At the conclusion of the service, the Nunc Dimittus was sung, and as the procession left the church by the south door, Mendelssohn’s Funeral March was played by the organist. Mr. F. W. Slater. a Masonic service was conducted by Messrs. Frank Hayward, Percy Mepharn, E. Tustin, A. D. McKay, Rev. Paterson and Mr. Hilton, after which the returned soldiers placed poppies on the grave. Archdeacon Young conducted a burial service also. The pall-bearers were Messrs.

Russel, P. Menham. C. P. Brown, G. I McElwain, R. L. Thompson, and R. G. Taiboys. A memorial service is to be conducted at All Saints’ Church on Sunday. It will be fully choral, the communion being sung by the boys’ choir . and the celebrant will be the Rev. Lambert.
