WANGANUI RUGBY

TO-MORROW’S MATCH A CHALLENGE TO KAIERAU CAN OLD BOYS MAKE GOOD? To-morrow Wanganui and Old Boys are to challenge Kaierau, the present senior champions of Wanganui chib Rugby, to the leadership of the A grade competition for 1936. It will be a serious challenge, too, the challengers having specially prepared themselves for it. Naturally, Kaierau, alert to the knowledge that a loss will put the maroon Hag out of the picture, has been training solidly for the great game. Approached yesterday officials of the respective clubs reported that the teams would take the field at full strength. “It will be the strongest team we can turn out,” stated one of the leading men of Kaierau, “and with the club right after the cup there will be no hesitation about the match. We will be right into it from the jump.’’ Old Boys are just as sanguine of success. They have been vastly encouraged by the improvement the side has shown during the season. “We also will have the strongest side we can lay our hands on. We, too, will be right after the cup. We also will go into the game rignt from the jump.”—Those are the expressions of opinion from Old Boys’ camp. And what will the result be? It will be one of the hardest matches of the year to pick. On the law of averages—one team cannot beat Kaier au twice in the one season —Kaierau would get preference. But averages can go sadly astray, especially in Rugby football, and the maroons know full well that they are facing a serious challenge, quite the hardest of the year. From experience of past Kaierau performances, the writer would say that the maroons play hardest when the opposition looks most formidable. If the game is open Old Boys stand a very fair chance of being 1936 champions. One can hear the “Oh yea" from the Marist lines, hear it distinctly, but the issue of the moment is Old Boys v. Kaierau. Marist will come into the picture later. Given a fine day to-morrow’s match will be the best of the 1936 competition. It is within the capacities of each team to win. SENIOR CURTAIN-RAISER MARIST AND TECHNICAL 0.8. Arrangements have been made to play Technical Old Boys against Marist in a curtain-raiser to the match Old Boys v. Kaierau to-morrow.
