TRENTHAM “HOPES”

DIAMOND AND BOOMERANG. The tracks at Trentham nave been out of commission for the past fortnight owing to the bad weather, with only the sand available for work, and (writes “Rangatira” in the Evening Post), so T. R. George decided to go south on Monday night with Diamond and Bomerange. On Monday morning both horses were allowed on the two-year-old grass track, Boomerang going along six furlongs on his own, and Diamond doing two rounds at three-quarter pace. Diamond and Boomerang, despite the setback in the weather, have both done well during the past fortnight, and they should not require jnuch work at Riccarton to fit thenf for their tasks next week. Diamond will be ridden in the Grand National by his now usual pilot, R. Smith. His only recent school was over six fences last Tuesday, but it is hoped to send him over the Riccarton country this week. Boomerang will be piloted in the Winter Cup by S. Wilson, who has no other engagement yet on the opening day of the meeting. Trentham opinion is strongly in favour of its two Diamond and Billy Boy. in the Grand National. The view is that they are about the only two horses in the probable field whose prospects cannot be seriously faulted on some ground. Billy Boy can definitely go the journey, and, despite his mounting years he seems to be still a force in the big steeplechases. It is also believed that Diamond will manage the distance. WAIRARAPA RACING CLUB SUCCESSFUL YEAR DEBENTURES PAID OFF "Both the New Year and autumn fixtures were successful financially, and in every other respect, but they would have undoubtedly been better from the point of view of income had the fields been better at the latter meeting." states the annual report of the Wairarapa Racing Club for the past year. The year commenced with a credit balance of £222 Os 7d in the current account and £1321 in the Post Office Savings Rank, and ended with a credit of £lB9 8s 5d at the Bank of New Zealand and £483 17s 9d on deposit in the savings bank. The balance of mortgage debenture stock fell on January 31, and the whole amount of £lBOO was paid oft The sum of £519 13s 7d was expended on auildings and improvements, and £B5 Ils 9d in chattels and implements. The retiring officers are: Patron, Mr. S. Cundy; president, Mr. Q. Donald; vice-presidents, Messrs. J. W. Card, Thomas Benton and H. Morison; honorary judge, Mr. C. J. TO MISS NATIONAL DUNMURE FOR LATER DAYS RIDING ENGAGEMEN TS CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 4. The southern horses Dunmure, Bandy Boa, and Money Mine arrived at Riccarton yesterday after being quartered for some time at Washdyke. T. R. George arrived from the north this morning with Diamond and Boomerang, and G. A. Reid came with Ruaform. Although the Southland ’chaser Dunmure has arrived at Riccarton he will not fulfil his engagement in the Grand National Steeplechase, but he may be a starter in other events later on at the meeting. The doubt concerning the riding of Punchestown in the Grand National Steeplechase has been settled. He will he handled by H. Turner, who has been associated with him in practically all his schooling. So far no arrangements has been made for the riding of High Speed, out there is a possibility of V. Langford’s have the mount. Nothing will be done, however, until the owner has been consulted. The following riding arrangements have been made for the Winter Cup: A. E. Ellis, Concertpitch; G. H. Humphries, Ponty; A. Messervy, Royal Gallant; and L. J. Ellis. Wino. SUCCESSFUL YEAR ■ GOOD SEASON AT FOXTON PALMERSTON N.. Aug. 5. Continued financial improvement is shown in the annual report of the Foxton Racing Club, to be presented to the annual meeting of members on August 20. After allowing for £202 10s for depreciation, a profit of £l5 Is Id was made for the year. During the year the club conducted two meetings, in September and May, both being well patronised by the public. The course and buildings have been kept in a good state of repair, and considerable improvements have been effected. Regret is expressed at Mr. W. Kirkland’s decision not to seek re-election to the committee. Mr. Kirkland has rendered valuable service to the club during his term of office and has consistently lent his support as an owner. Nominations have been received for the following positions:—President, Mr. W. E. Barber; vice-presidents, Messrs. S. B. Austin, M. B. Bergin, R. Bryant, and D. R. Ogilvy; stewards, Messrs. C. C. Price, E. H. Robinson, and E. M. Wylie. As there are no further nominations an election will not be necessary.
