STAKES AUCKLAND, Aug. 5. A decision to work on the principle of having no slake under £3OO this season was made yesterday by the committee of the Auckland Racing Club. The stake for the Auckland Cup has been fixed at £1750. an increase of £250. The Clifford Plate, weight-for-age, has been raised from £350 to £4OO. Where any open event was worth £3OO the stake will be raised to £350. Last season’s officials were reappointed as follows: Judge, Mr. R. B. Lusk: starter, Mr. R. H. Skipworth, handicapper. Mr. F. J. McManemin’ clerk of scales, Mr. H. B. Massey; clerk of course. Mr. W. S. Hirst; recall steward, Mr. P. H. Smith; start- | er’s assistant, Mr. A. Patterson. CHRISTCHURCH HUNT CLUB POSSIBLE DATE OF MEETING CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 4. There is a possibility that the Christchurch Hunt Club will hold a race meeting in place of the one that had to be abandoned last weekend. Saturday, August 29, is a date the committee has in mind, and if the meeting is gone on with a fresh programme will be drawn up. WOODVILLE TRAINER VISITOR TO WANGANUI F. DAVIS' LARGE TEAM The Woodville trainer F. Davis was a visitor to Wanganui yesterday. Among other missions he was making inquiries regarding suitable accommodation for the large team of horses which he is preparing for spring racing It is his intention to transfer them to Wanganui in plenty of time to put on the finishing touches for the meeting to be held here on September 10 and 12. He is experiencing difficulty, however, as there are few establishments here which can accommodate his large team. The danger that is presented by the modern bitumen road is also a factor in the situation as it appeals to the Woodville mentor, and the result is that he may have to curtail the size of the team for the Wanganui meeting. Davis has five Wanganui Guineas candidates: Mr. T. H. Lowry’s Birthday Party, Mrs. M. Curie’s Black Friar, Mr. W. H. Gaisford’s Mandamus and Mr. F. Ormond’s Karl, in addition to his own Arausio —Penelophon colt. It is likely that three of these will be brought through for next month’s meeting. The opinion that the several juveniles he is handling will be found not so forward as other two-year-olds was expressed by Davis, who has perhaps the best record of any trainer in the Dominion so far as the youngsters are concerned. He has under his care Mr. G. M. Currie’s PosterityEulogy filly Relative, who was reared on the bottle when her famous dam died at foaling. Though built on shapely lines Relative is stated to be somewhat highly-strung. Another youngster who is showing outstanding promise is Francis Drake, by Chief Ruler from Tame Duck, and therefore a full-brother to Admiral Drake, an Auckland Cup winner. He is a particularly good-looking colt, with plenty of size, and he impresses with a nice, easy style of moving.
