WOMEN’S HOCKEY YESTERDAY’S GAMES The ladies’ championship matches for the 1936 season were concluded yesterday in dull and cold weather. On the whole, the season has been has been most, satisfactory. In fact, there has been a larger following than that, enjoyed by the Rugby code. Hockey has improved greatly in Rangitikei and the competition matches have always been closely contested. Congratulations must, go to the United eleven, the xvinners for the present season. They have played good hockey throughout and have deI served their position. Results of the games xvere:—Un.'ted 2, defeated Tutaenui nil, at Marton; Te Hiiri defaulted to Halcombe. United v. Tutaenui Fast and exciting play characterised the Tutaenui-United encounter on the Marton Park before a good crowd of enthusiasts. United xvon by two gosls to nil. Play swung up and doxvn 1 field with great rapidity. If there ever was a team that was unlucky it was Tutaenui. Countless times Tutaenui emerged into the United circle and either the good shots hit the uprights or missed the net by the proverbial whisker. ' The first half was very even and ended in favour of United by one 1 goal to nil, obtained about mid-way ‘ through the spell, when E. Low and ; D. Field broke through and enticed the goalkeeper (B. Edge) out. for E. ’ Low to cap off a good effort by netling. After t he change-over Tutaenui xvas the better team and had United dej fending desparately, and it was only the good xxork of M. Morrison and J. ’ Green that prevented Tutaenui from penetrating the defence. A common ; fault: among the Unitect eleven was , their habit, to obstruct, the chief ofj fender being V. Hughes. Good work ? for the xvinners was done by B. I Staples, D. Field and E. Low. xvhiie I. Coles and J. Warren rendered good J service, with, at times, AT. Moss shoxv- • ing glimpses of her representative L form. The tackling by the United • team xvas a feature of their play. • Just before time United notched there second goal. when, from a scramble in front of the goal mouth, M. Morri- : son sent in an excellent, shot. Kia Ora v. Athletic j With Kia Ora doing all the attack- - ing and Athletic all the defending, Kia Ora easily accounted for Athletic in a very one-sided affair at by 12 goals to nil. It xvas too onesided 1o create much interest, the game being rather a drab sort of a match. However, the match xvas played in the best of spirits and both winners and losers had an enjoyable time. The half-time score xvas 8 to nil and Athletic, after the interval, infused more vim into their play, Kia Ora managing to notch only 4 goals. P. Ixvikau (6), M. Iwikau (5) and M. White (1) xvere the scorers and Messrs. A. Blair and Lovell the referees. After the game players and officials xvere entertained at afternoon tea in the school house. Championship Tabic As a result of Tutaenui losing and Kia Ora winning, Kia Ora are run-ners-up in the club championship, one point ahead of Tutaenui and Halcombe, the tinal points being as folloxv: — , United 1" Kia Ora 12 , ■ Tutaenui H Halcombe - 11 Te Hiiri s Athletic 1 MARTON MAN WINS DX CHALLENGE CUP The twelfth and last of the competitions for the Radio Record DX Challenge Cup has noxx' concluded and the lucky winner of this handsome silver trophy is Mr. J.
