RE-ABSORPTION OF TRADESMEN

SKILL QUICKLY REGAINED Employers generally throughout New Zealand are availing themselves of the staffing facilities offered by the Labour Department’s s Placement Scheme, but during a recent investiI gation of the possibilities of improvi ing and extending these services, it was found that some employers douot I whether tradesmen who have not, through no fault of their own, been able to practice their regular trade for some time, have retained their usual efficiency. Despite the belief which in some quarters has been openly expressed, that the rehabilitation of such men is impracticable, if not, impossible, relatively large numbers of them have been placed, with surprisingly good results. Although the men were naturally somewhat, hesitant when they resumed their calling, they quickly regained their expertness and with two exceptions, retained the positions found for them. The weekly increases in the totals of unemployed men placed in private work, without a subsidy from the employment, promotion fund, indicate clearly that industry’s capacity for re-hiring is steadily growing. The placement scheme has kept faith with employers by maintaining a scrupulous scrutiny of the industrial capability of men recommended for employment, and the Labour Department states that the same care will continue to be exercised.
