TABLE TENNIS

WANGANUI ASSOCIATION MATCHES TO BE PLAYED ALTERATION OF RULES The rules of the International Table Tennis Federation have been adopted by the New Zealand Table Tennis Association, and this calls for an alteration in the present rule covering service in doubles. The new rule is as follow:— “For doubles, the table is divided longitudinally, by a line Jin. wide. Service is always from the right-hand court to the right-hand court. A ball falling on the line, is regarded as a good service.” The Wanganui Association have decided to hold the Wanganui championships on August 20, 21, and 22, at the Wanganui Table Tennis Club rooms, entries closing on August 17, 1936. The championship should prove very interesting this season, especially in the men's section. Jack Connor is playing very well at present. Leo Connor is not playing quite up to form. Jones, Forward, Healey, and Hawkins, of the Post and Telegraph Club, are all playing good tennis, but with a little more experience, Hawkins should be No. 1. Ross Brothers (3), Nicholls, and Feist, from Brunswick, bring a variety of sendees into the game, and are to be reckoned with, although they endeavour to use their winning shots too often, and consequently lose points through overdriving. The Post and Telegraph Club have some good talent in their B and C teams, particularly Garner and Parker. Tournament experience will help their game considerably. In the Wanganui Club, Charlie Byers has improved, but lack of being able to adapt his game to his opponents, has caused him losses where he should register wins. Jim Broad is as steady as ever, but should develeop a winning shot. Davidson has speeded up his game lately, and is clever at retrieving almost impossible balls. Hoskins is a new arrival, and is playing very well, but is weak on his forehand, and is often caught off his balance. Play in St. Lawrence’s Club has improved greatly, due to the coaching received. The change of style has suited some players quite well. This club is very enthusiastic, and congratulations to “Jack” on his efforts in coaching. Ken Parnell has improved his game, but is mainly defensive. He wants to develop a winning shot. Rountree plays a good game, and should take a j rubber bat. Watson is playing very well, but he wants to watch the spin on the ball, closely, when receiving service. The following matches must be played by Friday next:— B Grade.—St. Lawrence’s v. Maxwell; St. Lawrence’s v. Post and Telegraph No. 2; St. Lawrence's v. Kai Iwi; Brunswick v. Post and Telegraph No. 2; Brunswick v. Post and Telegraph No. 1; Maxwell v. Wanganui No. 2; Post and Telegraph No. 1 v. Wanganui No. 1; Wanganui No. 1 v. Kai Iwi. C Grade.—St. Lawrence’s No, 1 v. St. Lawrence’s No. 3; St. Lawrence’s No. 1 v. Brunswick No. 1; St. Lawrence's No. 1 v. Brunswick No. 3; St. Lawrence’s No. 2 v. Brunswick No. 2; St. Lawrence’s No. 2 v. Post and Telegraph No. 1; St. Lawrence's No. 3 v. Wanganui; Maxwell No. 1 v. Wanganui; Post and Telegraph No. 1 v. Brunswick No. 1; Post and Telegraph No. 1 v. Post and Telegraph No. 2. If the results of the above are not handed to the secretary promptly, the winner will be decided by toss. The ranking ladder now stands as follows: 1. —H. Jones. 7. —J. Dempsey. 2. —B. Hawkins. B.—D. Davidson 3. —J. Forward. 9.—L. Garner. 4. —A. Healey. 10.—J. Broad. 5. —L. Connoor. 11.—A. Parker. 6. —J. Connor, 12.—L. Hoskins. The following matches are to be completed by Friday next:—Hawkins v. Jones; Healey v. Forward; L. Connor v. J. Connor; Davidson v. Dempsey; Broad v. Garner; Hoskins v. Parker.
