WHAKATANE PAPER MILLS
inspection. VERY MUCH IMPRESSED. “From observations made to-day T am convinced personaly, that the AVlia- | katane Paper Mills has a great future and deserves the confidence and support of the people of the district,” said Mr. A. G. Hultquist, M.P., recently, when discussing the details of a visit of inspection he made with Mr. C. H. Burnett, M.P., to the company's plantations and mill site. “It is perfectly obvious that the company means business,” continued Mr. Hultquist, “and the immensity of the project and i thorough manner of development by the | directors satisfies me as to the ability of the company to carry out its claim*. There are some very highly qualified men in the company’s service such as Mr. de Guerre, the American expert, nnd Professor H. H. Corbin, who is undoubtedly a first-class authority on forestrv work. So far as Mr. Burnett and T are concerned we will do everything in our power to help the company and we are grateful for the thorough manner in which Messrs. Horrocks. Worley, ■Stewart, Anderson, and Professor Cor- • bin explained all details to us. We believe that this will be a wonderful thing for Whakatane and the Dominion.’ ’ Describing the day’s activities, Mr. Hultquist said that he and Mr. Burnett left at nine in the morning, and first inspected the mill site where building is expected to start in July. Then the party went by car to the Matahina block, receiving a fine welcome there. They were deeply impressed with the manner in which the company was treating its employees. After lunch they journeyed on to the Pukahunui block at the far end of the State forests, almost on to the Taupo Road and
after inspecting went to the look-out and viewed the wonderful aspect across , the Kiangaroa Plains. Mr. Burnett and Mr. Hultquist later attended a meeting with the directors of the company and Messrs. W. Sullivan (Mayor of Whakatane) and Walter Reid (chairman of the Whakatane County Council) and discussed matters requiring the approval of certain local bodies. (Arrangements have since been concluded with the Fletcher Construction Co., Ltd. for the erection of the mills. The building programme has been divided into two sections. Section one, involving an estimated outlay of £350,000, iwill enable the company to manufacture groundwood pulp and pulp board. Section two, involving an estimated capital outlay of £lBO,OOO, will produce chemical pulp.).
