PARIKINO SPORTS

SATURDAY’S BIG EVENT THRILLING HORSE JUMPING LARGE GATHERING OF AXEMEN. The ninth annual sports of the Parikiuu Sports Club was held on Mr. J. J. Lissetle's property on Saturday under ideal weather conditions. The entries for all the different events were stroig and competition was keen. The attendance, although it was not. as great as in other years on account of a number of other attractions, was good, and those who made the journey were treated lo a good day’s outing. The chief events of the day we'e naturally the horse jumping competitions. in which the best junipers of the district strove for the honours. The jumping was of a high standard, especially in the open class, in which competition for the 20-guinea challenge cup was keen. The ring events, too, were popular with the spectators, and the task of the judges in differentiating between the various well-groomed and sleek-looking horses was a difficult one. The wood-chopping events, a feature of another year’s sports, were well patronised this year by local and visiting axemen. was of an exceptionally high standard and iu the three main events there was little time separating the three placed men. The programme was completed by a number of athletic events in which members of the Wanganui Amateur Athletic Club competed. A large number of people did not make the trip to Pari kino this year, believing that the condition of the road was bad. The road, however, with the exception of rough parts on Gentle Annie, was in good condition. On Saturday night a dance was held in the Parikino Hall, and continued until the early hours of yesterday morning. The officials controlling the fixture were:—.Judges: Horse events, Mr. 8. G.
