PEACE PROPOSALS IN ABYSSINIA
'J’Hli "explanation” offered that the ‘’Cease Fire,” instruction issued in Abyssinia was the result, of static interference during a. wireless conversation between Alarshal Badoglio and .Signor Alussolini, is too thin to be entertained. It is possible, when the housewife orders the groceries over the telephone, for an error to creep in; but it is not so when a marshal is asking for authority to stop the advance into enemy country and the political head is saying emphatically, “No!” Now comes the news, significantly' from Paris, to the effect that peace negotiations have been opened in Abyssinia between representatives of the belligerents. This news is in line with probabilities, and can be accepted as correct, although it will quite likely be denied by a message from Rome. has been previously' indicated, must get back to a consolidated position. Alarshal Badoglio sees the need for this consolidation, hut the political pressure upon II Duee make it inconvenient for him to authorise such a movement.
