VARIEGATED THISTLE
WANGANUI COUNTY’S OPINION. I USELESS TO PUT IT ON FIRST I SCHEDULE. The Wanganui County Council is of opinion that it is useless to put varigated thistle on the first schedule of the Noxious Weeds Act. A letter from the 'Department of Agriculture was read to the meeting yesterday stressing the menace of the weed and suggestion that the time was opportune for its declaration on the first schedule. “T have not changed m.y opinion one iota in this,month/’ said the county
I chairman (Mr. -Dunean Mackintosh). “We all realise that it is impossible to do anything with the weed except in ! November, and at that time it is iniposi sible to yet labour.” Mr. Mackintosh added that the department had done nothing in regard to ragwort in this district. It was impossible for one inspector to cover the whole area. Wanganui had an excellent inspector, but he was not getting the backing necessary. C'r. A. Rice: I would like to see the farmers do something to keep the thistle down. A Voice: The department has started 10 years too late. It was decided to oppose .the suggestion that the weed be added to the first schedule.
