The secretary of the company, Mr. R. C. Evans, made this announcement to-day, commenting on a cable that 8000 tons of coal would be slipped to Melbourne from Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, in January. The cable added that the shipment was at the unusually low freight rate of 13s 3d a ton. Negotiations for further cargoes were proceeding. “Less than one week’s supply of coal has been received by the Metro politan Gas Company from the Maitland mines, N.S.W., since November 23,” said Mr. Evans. Reserves Needed. “As it ic the company's policy to carry reserve stocks for three months gas supply, it has been thought advisable to take this step to ensure that consumers will nut suffer inconvenience. The orders have been placed at a very heavy increase in price. In addition, the coal to be delivered has not tb-e value of Maitland coal for gas-making purposes, and this will cause a large advance in manufacturing costs.”
