AIR LINER CRASH
ENGINEERS SAW LIGHT EVIDENCE AT INQUEST. ALEXANDRIA, Jan. 14. Details of the anxious wait for the City of Khartoum were given at the inquest. Two ground engineers gave eviden-e that they saw what they believed was the noselight of the ’plane at about 7.15 p.m. It was twice extinguished, after which there was no sign of the 'plane. Captain Travers, pilot of the control boat on the other side of the landing area, reported that the ’plane had not arrived. The superintendent of the seaplane station gave evidence that he was informed that it was the only 'plane that had not arrived. No mention was made of lights. Shortly before 8 p.m. he decided that the matter was urgent and informed the commander of the warship Beagle. He telephoned the naval Commander-in-Chief, also the Air Force, and then took an Imperial Airways ’plane and joined in the search. Broadcasts were made to all shipping, but nothing further was reported till lhe Brilliant picked up Pilot Wilson. The coroner expressed sympathy with Mr. Wilson, adding that everyone ad mired the pluck he had shown. SALVAGED MAILBAGS CONTENTS SATURATED. DARWIN, Jan. 15. The portion of the 3001bs. of Australian mail salvaged from the City of Khartoum was so damaged by water that it could not be sorted upon arrive! at Darwin. In one bag was a mass of sodden letters. Some of the bundles were reduced to a pulp. It is probable that the other bags are in a similar condition.
