BUILDING OF SHIPS BEST SINCE JUNE, 1931 BRITAIN TO THE FORE Received Jan. 15. 5.5 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 14. ■ The improvement in shipbuilding is | shown by Lloyd’s returns for the ! quarter ended December 31, 1935. The I total of 1,543,153 tons, excluding Rus--1 sia, from which no figures were availI able, is the highest for any quarter j since June, 1931. Of the total, 48.2 ; per cent, is shown as being built in J Britain and Ireland. i The British total of 743,086 tons rei gisteis an increase of 212,532 tons for the quarter, ?s compared with the previous September, and is the highest for live years. It exceeds the aggregate tonnage under construction in seven leading countries abroad, among which Germany heads the list with 254,121 tons, followed by Japan with 118,610 tons. Construction to tne extent of 311,100 tons was begun ; n Bri'nin in tho last three months. Steam and motor oil-tankers under construction total 438.560 tons, Britain again heading the list in number and tonnage. Half the tonnage being constructed in Britain at December 31 related to motor-ships.
