OBITUARY

Mr. ROBERT S. THOMSON The many friends of Mr. Robert Steel Thomson will learn with sincere regret of his sudden death on Saturday last after a brief illness of three days. The deceased was an'enthusiastic racegoer and was a member of the Wellington Racing Club, Wanganui Jockey Club and Wanganui Trotting Club. For many years in business in Huntcrville, the late Mr. Thomson retired some 12 years ago and has since resided in Wanganui. The deceased was most- popular and his cheery disposition and genial personality will b? greatly missed by all those with whom he came in contact. The Wanganui Commercial Club has lost one of its staunchest members, while the Wanganui oGlf Club is bereft ot a member who was seen almost daily on the links. The funeral left the residence of the deceased’s nephew, Mr. Eobert Cook, at 8 Ilolyoake Street, Wanganui East, for the Aramono Cemetery yesterday afternoon and was largely attended by friends in Wanganui, Hunterville and Marten and by members of those clubs with which he waa associated. The pallbearers were Messrs. E. Cook C. Mann, C. S. Swan, G. G. Burgess, I. S. Wallace (Wanganui), and L. J. Thompson (Hunterville). The late Mr. Thomson, who was unmarried, is survived by two brothers and two sisters, who reside in the Nelson. district. MR. WALTER JAMES PENN [ Per Pres. Association. ] NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 12. The death of Mr. Walter James Penn, aged 77, formerly editor of the Taranaki Herald, occurred on Saturduy During 37 years occupancy of the editorial chair Mr. Penn did much for the district. He came to New Zealand in 1881 and settled at Stratford, which was then in. bush. His practical knowledge of conditions in Taranaki and of t.ho°needs of the settlers made him an earnest and skilful advocate of their cause, and much of the progress of the province and the port of New Plymouth was duo to him. He retired from the editorship in 1932.
