WANGANUI CENTRE CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT FINAL DAY OF SECTION PLAY The third and final day of section play in the Wanganui Bowling Centre’s Christmas tournament took place on Saturday, all games being played on the St. John’s greens. The weather was warm and overcast with a slight breeze which increased as the day advanced. On completion of the eighth round several forecasts were made as to how many wins would qualify to go into post-section play. It was generally expected that all with six wins would participate. For this to come about Tilley would have to defeat Benefield and McKay do the same to Boyd, but it so happened that both Benefield and Boyd won their last games giving them seven wins each for Section A. In Section B Scrivener had eight wins, the nearest to him in this section being Goldstone with six wins. Boyd and Benefield each winning their last game put all “six” wins out of the count, leaving only three for post-section play to-day. They are Scrivener, Benefield and Boyd. Scrivener has the bye for the first round, which will be between Benefield and Boyd. Play starts at 9 a.m. on St. John’s green and the games will be played on the .two-life system. Description of Play. McKay and Boyd had a great contest, the latter fighting for dear life, for defeat meant that he would be out of post-section play. On the first head Boyd secured four, and on the sixth McKay got a full hand, making the score 10—7 in his favour. During the next six heads both sides worked hard, the board reading 14—12 to Boyd on the 12th head. On. the 15th. head the score read 15 all. On completion of the 19th. Boyd was one ahead, the score being 19—18 to him. On the two remaining heads Boyd secured singles on each, giving him victory by three points. In the Benefield-Tilley game the former, like Boyd, started off with four on the first head. On the fifth he secured a full hand, making the board read 9-5 in his favour. On the 14th the score stood at 13 all. On the 15th Tilley obtained a single but did not score again till the 20th, when he obtained three, the score now reading 19—17 against him. On the 21st Benefield notched a single, giving him a win by three points. For this game Tilley and Steel (his No. 3) changed placed, the latter playing as skip. While this game, and also that between McKay and Boyd, was i- progress, played on rinks adjoining each other, spectators had every opportunity of watching both games without having to shift.
