FOOD DEPOTS
WYATT EARP’S TASK RELIEF FOR ELLSWORTH SHIP NEAR CHARCOT ISLAND [By Telegraph—Press Association—Cnpy» : ght] Received Dec. 29, 7.15 p.m. NEW YORK, Dec. 28. A North American Newspaper Alliance message from the Wyatt Earp says: Favourable winds ha,ve brought the Wyatt Earp within 66 miles of Charcot Island two days ahead of lime. Th© action of the winds is a mixed blessing, however, as it has edged the ice pack to such an extent that a takeoff by aeroplane from the icefieldis is impossible, and a takeoff from the water by the use of pontoons will not be possible until the sea calms, and in any event will be hazardous. Nevertheless, pontoons have been fitted and the motor and other equipment given a final check. Lymburner will attempt a 11 Ljht to drop food supplies for Ellsworth soon as possible. As with ponluons there is no- chance of landing on the ice, a long niotai tubular container has been devised measuring 13 inches by 17 feet. It contains 3401b5. of food and fuel, sealed from water and air. Two flags will also be dropped c-a tile spot if the container lands lengthwise and not straight up, as it would be inconspicuous. " The flight, once started, will be completed in a couple of hours, but just how long the expedition will feel justified in waiting fc-r calm enough season must be decided as time progresses. It is still felt that Ellsworth and Kenyon are at Little America, and that the expedition is anxious to push on there. Nevertheless, every effort wiil be made to lay a depot at Charcot as directed by Ellsworth.
